Subject: TV is bad, but capitalism is not

I agree that TV is pointless and boring, however centering your argument around the 'evil' capitalism will do more harm than it helps. Many people in the world are quiet happy with capitalism. I know I love capitalism.. its well known that capitalism is HUMAN NATURE. Its human nature to want to buy and sell, or going back to older times, trade services and products. Nothing wrong with a company trying to 'get ahead' anymore than me trying to get ahead. Tv makes our children stupid, tv wastes time, tv is bad in many ways, but trying to use Anti-TV as a shield to hide your anti-capitalism makes me sick. Yes, Im a capitalist pig, and I like it that way.

That being said, I dont own or watch tv. For many reasons, not because Im afraid of having my mind controlled by advertising. Im not affected by advertising, Ive never bought or wanted an item due to advertising. If people get brain washed by advertising, thats their own fault. Your website is none other than advertising in essance, so how can you preach against that. There are many GOOD reasons to do away with TV. Trying to link it to capitalism is not a good reason.

"Yay capitalism" --Austin Powers (I thought me quoting a movie would be rather funny)

God you're pathetic! Someone should turn off your life support, you lousy leftist, pinko, granola eating, volvo driving, pseudo-intellectual putz. You sure seem to like your computer quite a bit. Maybe a little too much. Addict. The world is tiring of your type. Soon the television army will rise up and eat the rotting souls of dirty hairy people like you. KILL YOUR OWN TV but keep it to yourself.
Your friend,
Willy

Subject: My Two Cents

Contrary to what people at this site believe, I do not think TV will be the downfall of civilization. TV is the opium of the people in this time and age. However, every age has had its opium. Plato spoke out against the plays of Homer and other authors of antiquity. The Romans had the coliseum. During the Renaissance, the stage and the plays of Shakespeare and Marlowe. Now we have the TV, and the world keeps turning. What do all those things have in common. They are a way for people to move away from the harshness of reality and hope or believe in something better. TV is something that gives people something more than the routine. It gives them laughter, sadness, fleeting terror, or the ability to move to another world. It is no different than a book in that respect. It is no different than Homer, Shakespeare, or Hemingway. Its all entertainment. And desire for entertainment has and always will be a human characteristic.

In sum, people have the right to live their life in front of the TV. Conversely, people have the right to turn off the TV. It's their decision to make, and that decision is what makes life worth living for. No, I do not watch TV. But the whys and hows are not important. The result is not important. What is important is that I have a choice.

I respect your site in that criticism is what changes. There are good and bad aspects to TV, as with everything. Hopefully, your criticism will be a force to change the bad aspects of TV.

Subject: A question.....

Over the years I have seen "kill your television" bumper stickers, and have always wanted to ask the owner of the car about it. What I want to know is why you would say "kill your TV" and not "burn your books"? To me TV is a neutral device, as are books. There is a lot of very bad programming as there are very bad books. Just don't view bad TV or read bad books. TV in my opinion is not inherently bad, it can be used for educational purposes, even though at the time it is used for broadcasting crap.
I also feel that this medium (computers and the net) is like TV, but with billions of channels and interactive.
Just Wondering.
Sincerely
Lawrence

Subject: Defence and Justification of Tv Violence

Hello, I have read the articles in your website and some of them were excellent. However, I regret to say that your articles are rather one-sided, without any defence for violence of television. Is Tv violence so bad that you condemn it thoroughly? Is it so bad that there isn't any benefits of tv violence? I hope that you would enlighten on regarding this issue.

Thanks,

KwokSiong

Please keep watching t.v. as much as possible. It’s great when the mass
media are brain washed into a coma and eventually unable to think for
themselves or are afraid to leave the house. As selfish as I am, I have the
rest of the world to myself !

How about channels such as the Discovery Channel or the Learning channel, I watch a lot of TV but find myself drawn to either those two if not the hockey game. If you throw in the local news as well then you can watch TV without having to put up with mainstream crap from MTV and the unbelieveably unreal "Reality" shows. When I turn off my TV I will actually have learned something, in moderation TV can lead to time just as well spent as reading a book or going for a jog.

Dame you suck ass. This jerry mander is going to get a kick in face if ever see him. His "arguments" are pure opinion and weak at best. If you don't want to watch t.v don't. Stop trying to force your weak opinions on every one else.

I found the violent reactions to your anti TV ethos most entertaining, evidently there really are people living such empty lives that they have to spend most of their free time in front of something that degrades and trivialises the precious life that's been given to them, furthermore it has given billions of fools licence to not think for themselves in perpituity, no wonder we're doomed !
