The Anti-TV Cartoon Sculpture at the Millennium Dome in London

On my first trip to England in January 2000, I was pleased to find an anti-TV display at the Millennium Dome in Greenwich (just outside London). It is found in the "Self Portrait" section of the pavilion which is described as a "celebration of the United Kingdom's land, people, attitudes and tastes." I guess there are a lot of couch potatoes in Britain. Below is a picture of the colorful Self Portrait building.

Here is a picture of the sculpture. It has a zombified viewer gaping at a television set while spouts of "mushy goop" shoot out of the screen.

Notice his vacant look. I like the way his hands have completely fused with the chair while clutching the remote control. Look like anyone you know?

Now the Millennium Dome is not a totally anti-TV attraction. In fact, there were probably more video screens in The Dome than any other place I've been. I do recommend visiting the site before the end of the year when it is supposed to turn into something else. Americans expecting Disney World are in for a disappointment. The attractions at the Millennium Dome are more interactive, walkthrough artwork than roller coasters. The Dome is extremely enjoyable though, I liked the "Journey" and "Home Planet" attractions which both made me confront my humanity and gain a better perspective of the world. The "Millennium Show" of flying performers and dancers set to Peter Gabriel's music was great.
